10th Malaysia Plan - Entry age for school lowered to five

It was announced today that the government plan to lower the entry age for school from 6 to 5. This plan would be carried out in stages. The proposal is part of 10th Malaysian plan to ensure that our country would be at par with developed countries.

3 Months Maternity Leave

It was recently suggested by certain party to increase the number of maternity leave to 90 days instead of the normal practice of 30 or 60 days. Taking care of newborn is not an easy task especially if you are first time mother. Furthermore, many couples might no have any relatives to help them especially if they stay in the city, far away from their hometown. If your look at this in the employers' perspective, they might not agree to extend maternity leave for mothers. Companies that are small or running on low budget may have problem giving paid leave for 90 days.

"Education Ministry mulls licence for teachers
Teachers may be required to sit for a qualifying exam to obtain their teaching licence just like doctors and lawyers if the Education Ministry's proposal is accepted. Deputy Education minister Dr Puad Zarkashi said the licensing was proposed as an initiative to ensure professionalism in the teaching profession and to avoid bogus teachers or those involved in criminal activities from remaining in the profession."

Clinic Refuses to treat injured child

The local newspaper reported recently that a clinic refused to treat a child who was critically injured due to child abuse. If I am not mistaken, there have been many reports regarding general practitioners in clinics refusing to treat gravely injured victims. I am not sure what is the doctor's reason for not helping these poor victims but I think as a doctor, they should at least help the injured by giving first aid. Aren't doctors suppose to help people? What happen to their sense of social responsibility? What is your say?

Polystyrene window frame shock for house buyers - The Star Tuesday May 11

I just couldn't believe it when I read about a certain developer in Butterworth used polystyrene as window frame. I would be angry too if I were to buy a house that does not comply to what is stated in the contract.
What is your opinion about the quality of houses built by Malaysian developers?

Voice Recorded Answering Machine

There are many companies using automated voice recording to answer incoming phone call. One of the most common ones are the banks. I always have problem trying to decide which response number I should press and by the time the session recording ends, I would forget what was said earlier. Then I have to hang up and call back again. Back to square one and start all over again. Some of the options available also doesn't make sense.

Malaysian Nuclear Power Plant

While the industrial sectors welcome the setting up of nuclear power plant in Malaysia to boost the supply of electricity, the news caused some mixed reaction from the public at large. Is there an alternative and safer method? Do you think our country have the expertise and right people to run the plant efficiently? What is your view?

Our Public Transport

Our authorities spend years and years to discuss how to improve our public transport but I never see any significant improvement. The bus schedule is still very erratic and it is not easy to go around KL using our public transport unless you have plenty of time to spend. Our taxis are still trying to haggle the price although there are recent campaign to stop this practice.
